BWOPA-CA Statement in Defense of Assemblymember Tina McKinnor

BWOPA CA condemns media commentary that centers on Assemblymember Tina McKinnor’s personal appearance rather than her legislative leadership and policy contributions. This type of coverage reflects a long-standing pattern in which Black women lawmakers are diminished through sexist and racialized tropes that distract from their governance and public service. Such framing undermines public trust and erodes the legitimacy of Black women’s political leadership.

BWOPA-CA calls on media outlets to refocus coverage on Assemblymember McKinnor’s legislative record, policy priorities, and service to her constituents, and to reject commentary that reinforces harmful stereotypes or reduces Black women leaders to optics instead of impact. We also call on allies, advocacy organizations, and the public to actively elevate Black women legislators’ policy leadership and hold the media accountable when coverage falls short of ethical standards.
