Protecting Our Peace, Prioritizing Our Healing

Together, let us affirm that protecting our peace is not a luxury—it is a necessity.

As we recognize Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month this July, BWOPA-CA proudly joins communities across the nation in elevating the importance of mental wellness among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Named in honor of the late Bebe Moore Campbell—teacher, author, journalist, and tireless advocate—this month reminds us that mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge both the unique challenges and incredible resilience that exist within our communities.

For generations, Black women have carried the weight of leadership, caregiving, advocacy, and community-building—often while navigating systemic inequities, racial trauma, economic pressures, and the expectation to remain strong through it all. While strength is one of our greatest assets, healing is our birthright.

At the Black Women Organized for Political Action California (BWOPA-CA), we believe that mental health is a health equity issue. Creating space for honest conversations, access to resources, and culturally responsive support is essential to advancing the well-being of Black women, families, and communities.

This month, we are especially proud to highlight the launch of the BWOPA Health Equity Report Series, beginning with our inaugural Mental Health Equity Report. This report serves as a call to action, shining a light on disparities, identifying opportunities for change, and offering recommendations to improve mental health outcomes for Black women and underserved communities throughout California.

As we continue our work under BWOPA-CA's Health Equity Pillar, we invite you to join us in breaking stigma, seeking support when needed, checking in on loved ones, and prioritizing self-care without guilt.

"Healing is not weakness. Seeking help is not failure. Prioritizing our mental well-being is an act of strength, courage, and self-love." 💜
