BWOPA-CA Denounces Disrespect Toward Black Women Leaders on the Solano County Board of Supervisors
Statewide Organization Stands in Solidarity with Supervisors Wanda Williams and Cassandra James
Oakland, CA (November 3, 2025) - Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA-CA) expresses deep concern and disappointment over the conduct displayed toward Supervisors Wanda Williams and Cassandra James during the Solano County Board of Supervisors meeting held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
During the publicly broadcast session, remarks made by Supervisor Monica Brown, and later joined by Supervisors Mitch Mashburn and Vasquez, appeared to target Supervisors Williams and James for their proactive leadership activities—including their efforts to collaborate with government agencies and conduct district tours designed to connect residents with vital resources and services.
BWOPA State President and CEO LaNiece A. Jones stated that such exchanges undermine the standards of professionalism and collegiality expected in public governance.
“What occurred in that meeting was not in keeping with the standards of mutual respect and decorum that public office demands,” said President Jones. “Supervisors Williams and James have demonstrated exemplary leadership in their commitment to serve the people of Solano County. Their work to expand access, engagement, and equity deserves acknowledgment—not disparagement.”
BWOPA-CA stands in full solidarity with Supervisors Williams and James and calls upon
the Solano County Board of Supervisors to:
- Acknowledge and address the incident publicly.
- Reaffirm its commitment to professionalism, decorum, and equity in all proceedings.
- Ensure an environment in which all elected officials—especially women and leaders of color—can engage in civic discourse without bias or intimidation.
President Jones added, “Our democracy is strengthened when leaders model respect, integrity, and collaboration. We must all do our part to uphold those principles—particularly when the cameras are on and the public is watching.”
BWOPA-CA encourages community members to stand in unity with Supervisors Williams and James by attending the Solano County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, November 4th at 9:00 AM.
Faith leaders, civic organizations, members of the Divine Nine, and residents are invited to join in affirming the values of dignity, equity, and effective leadership that serve all communities.
